Giờ thì bạn hãy nhân lượng rác ấy gấp tỉ lần và hình dung tất cả chúng đều đang hiện diện trong ngôi nhà trái đất, thì bạn sẽ nhìn thấy thực trạng nhân loại đang đối xử với mẹ thiên nhiên tệ đến mức nào.
Tôi tự hỏi tại sao chúng ta không cho phép bất cứ ai xả rác vào nhà mình nhưng lại cho phép chính mình góp một tay xả rác vào ngôi nhà chung của sự sống như vậy. Có thể nói con người bằng việc xả rác vô tội vạ đã và đang phá hủy chính sự sống của mình. Nhiều nơi trên thế giới như Trung Quốc, Ấn Độ có bầu không khí ô nhiễm đến mức được so sánh mức độ độc hại tương đương với hút hàng trục thậm chí cả trăm điếu thuốc lá/ngày.
Tuy được đánh giá cao về môi trường nhưng Mỹ lại cũng là quốc gia xả rác nhiều nhất thế giới với con số 2kg rác thải/người/ngày, tức chỉ 5% dân số nhưng lại thải ra khoảng 30% tổng lượng rác thải toàn cầu. Khi các nước không muốn xử lý đống rác của họ thì họ sẽ tìm một nước khác để “xuất khẩu” rác:Trung Quốc, Ấn Độ, Philipines, Somalia… là những nước phải nhận một núi rác thải khổng lồ từ các nước khác, nhiều nhất là rác thải công nghệ cực kì độc hại.
Tái chế là một trong những cách xử lý rác thông minh nhưng dường như tái chế không thể nào là câu trả lời. Bởi vì lượng rác có thể được tái chế chỉ chiếm một phần rất nhỏ so với núi rác con người thải ra mỗi ngày. Thêm một lý do để tái chế không phải là câu trả lời cho vấn đề rác thải đó là để tạo ra lượng rác trong một thùng mà bạn vứt đi thì người ta đã xả ra tới 70 thùng rác khác ngay từ lúc ban đầu để sản xuất ra lượng hàng hóa tương đương một thùng rác ấy. Hay nói cho dễ hiểu hơn thì rác thải trong công nghiệp và sản xuất nhiều gấp 70 lần rác thải trong tiêu dùng. Nên dù cho có tái chế tất cả rác thải thì cũng chỉ mới giải quyết được phần nhỏ vấn đề. Hơn nữa, phần nhiều rác thải không tái chế được vì nó chứa quá nhiều chất độc hay nó được chế tạo để không thể tái chế được. Ví dụ như hộp giấy đựng sữa tươi hay nước hoa quả được tạo nên từ các lớp kim loại, giấy và nhựa dính chặt với nhau. Làm cách nào để bạn tách rời chúng ra mà tái chế được?
